One of Faga Wily's 25 carries for 135 yards
The 9 year winning streak over the OIA Red East rival Farrington Governors has been snapped as the Govs held off 2 Kahuku drives in the last 2 minutes. A failed PAT was the difference in what could be a preview of an OIA or even a State Championship.
Kahuku’s offense sputtered in the 1st half but the defense kept the Govs off the board by producing turnovers from Bronson Beatty(fum recovery, INT) and 92 yard Kawehena Johnson who had a 92 yard pick 6 that put the Red Raiders up at halftime 7-0. Farrington answered right away with a run heavy drive ending up in a Gov TD. The following Kahuku drive, highlighted by a 30 yard Wily run, ended on a failed 4th down pass attempt to a diving Kawe Johnson. Farrington scored another TD right after that on a 28 yard play-action pass to Toma Barrett. Kahuku had 6 penalties in those 3 drives and paid dearly for it. Faga Wily and Kahuku’s offense then drove down the field to make the score 14-13. Kahuku had 2 more chances but couldn’t move the ball into FG range and that was it.
With the loss, Kahuku is 2nd in the Red East and Farrington claims the top East seed in the OIA Playoffs regardless of what happens in the final week of the regular season. Kahuku (6-1) closes it’s regular season against Castle (2-5) next week and Farrington (7-0) will take on Moanalua (4-3).
Kahuku’s JV Overcomes Huge Adversity With A Hollywood Style Ending

After a Drew Williams TD put Kahuku up 6-0. Kahuku tried to end the Govs drive with a blocked FG. #5 Cliff Ramseyer beat the outside blocker and dove to block the kick, the blocker pushed Ramseyer in the back into the kicker. Result, Roughing the Kicker leading to a Gov TD 6 all. Backup QB Spencer Elmore then completed his 1st pass, a long TD pass plucked out of the air by Drayton Aki. Kahuku leads at the half 14-6.
We skip to the 4th quarter, Soli Afalava picks the ball off in the endzone and takes it 103 yards the other way. During the return, we saw the Back Judge waving as if it was a touchback but Afalava wasn’t even close to being down or out of bounds. Result, Kahuku ball 1st and 10 on their own 3 yard line. Blocked punt after the 3 and out set Farrington up at the 2. Govs tie it up 14 all. During the extra point conversion, I watched the coaches rally the team. How did they respond? Well after going back and forth with 2 3-and-outs on each side and a bad Gov punt, Kahuku got the ball on the Farrington 23 yard line with 1:04 left. Here’s how the next set of downs went.
1st and 10 on Farr 23 – Pitch to Drew Williams but he can’t get to the corner and is dragged down at the 24. Clock running.
2nd and 11 on Farr 24 – Elmore drops back to throw to Aki on the fade route. He catches it at the pylon but out of bounds.
3rd and 11 on Farr 24 – Elmore drops back to throw to Aki on the post route. The CB tips the ball over Aki’s head.
4th and 11 on Farr 24 – Elmore drops back to throw and has no one. He steps up in the pocket and is nearly sacked. Rolling to his left he finds Ku’uliko Carvalho who takes it in for 6 with 7 seconds left.
Ashely Kaka sealed the game with a pick and the JV Red Raiders remain undefeated at 8-0. Like we said earlier, Kahuku has a bright future ahead of them.
